Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim was central to the decision to sanction an exit for Andre Onana, per reports.

The goalkeeper appears to be on the verge of agreeing a move on loan to Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor after United signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day.

Onana joined United from Inter Milan in a £47.2million deal in 2023 but has failed to establish himself as a reassuring presence in goal and has yet to start a Premier League match this season.

The Cameroon international missed much of pre-season as he recovered from injury and made his return to action in Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby with an unconvincing display.

The 29-year-old has been unable to displace Altay Bayindir in goal under Amorim this term, who in turn has committed a number of errors in United's opening three matches of the season.

While Onana's error-strewn outing against Grimsby is said to have triggered a move to land Lammens as a priority, Amorim has different reasons for facilitating an exit altogether, with two key contributing factors.

The 40-year-old Portuguese coach wants to avoid a circus surrounding the selection of his goalkeeper each week if Onana was to be named among the subutitutes while Lammens plays, per Fabrizio Romano.

Amorim had reservations over hanging onto four goalkeeper too — veteran Tom Heaton is also in his squad — and anticipated issues rising over his decisions could only serve to increase the pressure on 23-year-old Lammens in his debut Premier League season.

The move to the Super Lig could also provide benefit to Onana in Amorim's mind. The deal was agreed with the view of offering Onana the plaform to star regularly in a bid to improving his confidence and form.

Trabzonspor are hopeful of getting a deal over the line for Onana in time for the ex-Ajax star to play this weekend against Fenerbahce after losing their first choice goalkeeper last week.

Ugurcan Cakir joined Galatasaray, another team who had been linked with a move for Onana, from Trabzonspor in a transfer that could be worth up to £31.2m.

New United goalkeeper Lammens meanwhile, already plans to be a rock behind Amorim's defence. “I think if you want to be a good goalkeeper, you have to be a rock behind the defence,” he siad.

"They have to trust you and count on you in difficult moments. That is something I take pride in. Of course, I can improve in this because the next level is bigger, but it is one of my attributes that I am proud of and I try to improve."
