Leeds United tipped for shock January swoop on Championship’s top scorer

Leeds United manager wanted to sign one more striker, apart from a versatile attacking midfielder, towards the end of the window. However, the Whites failed to add to their number 9 reserve, and the German will have to do what he has got until at least the winter transfer window.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has yet to start a game for Leeds this season since joining the club on a free transfer. The club are looking to build his fitness while Joel Piroe and Lukas Nmecha carry the burden of goalscoring for now.

Nmecha, another summer recruit, scored on his debut from the penalty spot against Everton, but Leeds are yet to find the back of the net from open play. The team have looked short of ideas and quality in the final third, which led to the manager’s demands for more forwards towards the end of the window.

Leeds are almost certain to bring in attacking reinforcements in the winter transfer window, and Farke has been backed to sign a player with whom he is familiar, in Josh Sargent.

Leeds United are being backed to sign Josh Sargent in January

Josh Sargent was heavily linked with a move to Leeds in the summer, and he did turn down a move to Germany in the last transfer window.

The forward has started the season in a blistering fashion, scoring in each of Norwich City’s opening four league games, and is the Championship’s top scorer with five goals.

Journalist Graeme Bailey insisted that Leeds should have snapped up Sargent in the summer and believes the club will be interested in him in January if Farke is still at Elland Road.

He stressed that the American has improved as a forward, and his hold-up play has become far better than it was last season. Bailey feels Sargent will be the perfect January window catch for Leeds.

“Leeds should have just done Sargent and [Emi] Buendia. To be honest, they still might, if Farke is still around!”, he told Leeds United News.

“It was crazy he stayed in the end. He is very good. He has honestly improved so much in terms of hold-up play.

“Even with Nmecha and Calvert-Lewin now there, he is perfect for Leeds long term. One to keep an eye on in future windows.”

Sargent could be the more gettable target in January

Leeds have been linked with an interest in Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta, but several other clubs want him and his asking price is set at £40m.

Sargent would be the more gettable target, and while Leeds fans could turn up their nose at him, the American is scoring goals in the Championship.

If he keeps scoring in the next few months, the rumours around Farke’s admiration for the Norwich City striker will grow louder ahead of the next transfer window.

The Canaries could be against selling a top player in the middle of the season if they are in with a chance to get promoted to the Premier League.
