EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. --Cam Heyward is not stressing his new contract, which added $3 million in incentives to his deal. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Heyward agreed to a deal late on Saturday, just a day before the team took the field against the New York Jets.
However, the deal is obviously not what Heyward wanted, which is a guaranteed raise. Instead, he was handed incentives tied to playoff wins.
“I don’t really want to talk about it now,” Heyward said. “I’ll answer that later. It’s not anything special, but we just won a big freaking game against the New York Jets. New quarterback. New freaking weapons. New freaking players on our side of the ball. Big win. I can’t really focus on anything else.”
Heyward, who is the 22nd highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL, says he talked to the team in late February that he would like a new deal. In Heyward’s own words, he just wants to be valued relative to the market that has continued to soar.
He has two more years left on the deal, and at 36, he could call it quits at the expiration of his deal. However, if Heyward would want to play longer beyond this deal, there could be another dispute next yea
