Former Steelers QB learns if he will keep starting job

Former Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson has learned his status as the starting quarterback of the New York Giants.

Wilson will keep his starting job for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, head coach Brian Daboll said Monday.

Daboll said after Sunday’s ugly loss to the Commanders that he wasn’t sure if rookie Jaxson Dart or veteran Russell Wilson would start Week 2.

However, he revealed on Monday that the Giants are rolling with Russell Wilson again this coming week.

"I have confidence in Russ, and we’re doing everything we can do each week to develop Jaxson,“ Brian Daboll said, according to Charlotte Carroll. ”He spends a lot of time after practice going through things that he needs to go through to prepare himself if he gets called upon to be ready to go.”

The 36-year-old Wilson signed a one-year deal with the New York Giants this offseason after spending the 2024 season with the Steelers.

Wilson and the entire New York offense struggled in the season opener against the Commanders.

The Giants managed only 6 points and 231 total yards in the ugly defeat, and Wilson completed less than 50 percent of his passes.

Despite the poor offensive showing, Russell Wilson was positive in his postgame comments.

“I thought we competed our butts off today,” the former Steelers QB said. “It was a physical game. I thought we left it all on the field and gave it our all, physically. Just, kind of, you stand tall in the midst of that game, just kind of battling through it and try to find a way to win.”

Russell Wilson went on to say that the offense’s issues came down to poor execution in the red zone. In reality, the Giants seemed to have problems moving the ball throughout the day.

Wilson was 17 of 37 passing for 168 yards with no touchdowns. He was also sacked twice. As for the rushing attack, New York averaged 3.2 yards per carry on 23 attempts.

“Like I said, they stopped us in the red zone,” Wilson commented. “I think that was the name of this game. We had eight or nine possessions. Two of them were down in the red zone. We didn’t capitalize on those, so that’s what we’ve got to do.”

Daboll said after the game that the coaching staff would evaluate the tape before naming a starting for Week 2.

“We’re going to get home and look at our game,” he said Sunday, per ESPN. “We have to do better around overall -- coaches, players, [all] around everybody. So we’ll get focused and ready to go on to Dallas.”

That decision is now in and Russell Wilson will start against the Dallas Cowboys Sunday afternoon.
