PFF grades, snap counts: Lions post lowest offensive grade in nearly two years

The Detroit Lions offense that was the top unit in the NFL last season looked like a shadow of its former self against the Green Bay Packers.

Under new offensive coordinator John Morton, the Lions struggled to produce and couldn’t find the end zone until deep into garbage time with the game already in hand for the Packers.

Their struggles were easily found in the Lions’ Pro Football Focus grades for their 2025 season-opener as they notched their lowest overall offensive grade of 60.1 since 2023.

In a Week 14 loss to the Chicago Bears, the Lions posted a 53.1 overall offensive grade, which remains the team’s worst mark since 2020.

See below for more on the PFF grades and rundown of the snap counts:

*PFF evaluates every player on every play in multiple facets of the game, such as passing, rushing, receiving, pass blocking, run defense, etc. It is important to note that PFF doesn’t base its grade on the outcome of the play, butrather what a player attempts to do on a given play.

Five highest-graded defenders (with at least 10 snaps): S Brian Branch (85.1), DE Aidan Hutchinson (72.0), LB Alex Anzalone (70.9), CB Amik Robertson (70.7), LB Derrick Barnes (69.1)

Five-lowest graded defenders (with at least 10 snaps): CB D.J. Reed (38.0), DL Tyleik Williams (48.7), DL D.J. Reader (50.8), DE Marcus Davenport (55.1), DL Patrick O’Connor (57.1)

Five highest-graded offensive players (with at least 10 snaps): OL Penei Sewell (70.8), TE Sam LaPorta (70.6), WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (69.8), RB David Montgomery (67.8), RB Jahmyr Gibbs (62.2)

Five lowest-graded offensive players (with at least 10 snaps): OL Graham Glasgow (43.6), QB Jared Goff (45.5), TE Brock Wright (50.5), WR Jameson Williams (53.7), OL Christian Mahogany (54.4)

*Detroit’s running game was rough, amassing 46 yards on 22 carries. The blocking from the Lions’ O-line had a lot to do with that and the team received a run-blocking grade of 49.3, the team’s lowest since a loss to the Carolina Panthers in 2022.

*The Lions secondary struggled containing the Packers passing attack early on and it particularly showed for veteran cornerback D.J. Reed, who had the lowest defensive grade of his career of 38.0. According to PFF, he was targeted five times, resulting in four catches for 47 yards.

*Despite quarterback Jared Goff throwing for 225 yards on nearly 80% completion, three turnover-worthy plays tanked his overall offensive grade to a 45.5 and passing grade to a 45.7. This was the third time in the last four years Goff has had a sub-50 grade in both categories in the Lions’ season opener.
