4 key passes/game: £43m United ace must start in best position vs Man City with 2 stars doubtful

Manchester United take on Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in Sunday’s Premier League clash.

The Red Devils picked up their first league victory of the campaign against Burnley before their international break.

Man United did not win back-to-back league games last season and have the chance to end the dreadful streak against Man City.

Ahead of the Manchester derby, the Red Devils are facing a race against time with the fitness of Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount.

Cunha picked up a minor hamstring injury against the Clarets, while Mount was substituted in the same game with a muscle issue.

The former has dropped hints that he could be fit for Sunday, but manager Ruben Amorim may handle him with extra caution.

The Portuguese tactician could include him in the matchday squad, but he may not feature from the off on the back of his injury.

The same could be the case with Mount, given his multiple muscle injuries since his move from Chelsea a couple of seasons ago.

With this in mind, it could be time for Amorim to start Bruno Fernandes in his preferred number 10 role against the Cityzens.

Despite playing in central midfield in the early weeks, Fernandes has been heavily involved with four key passes per appearance.

Fernandes has had plenty of the ball from his new position, but the United captain has had less influence in the final third.

The £43 million-rated star has averaged only 7.94 passes per game, given that he has had more defensive duties from the number eight position this term.

With Cunha and Mount coming off injuries, Amorim must unleash Fernandes in attacking midfield alongside Bryan Mbeumo for the derby.

Benjamin Sesko has admitted that he is getting better and faster in training. He should make his first league start for the club upfront.

With Fernandes playing higher up, Kobbie Mainoo appears the ideal candidate to partner Casemiro over an out-of-form Manuel Ugarte.

Ugarte has been guilty of losing regular possession right from pre-season, and Amorim does not seem to fully trust him at the moment.
