Cowboys stuck guessing as Giants keep QB mystery alive for Week 2

The Dallas Cowboys should have defeated the defending champs in Week 1. A huge fumble from Miles Sanders and costly drops from CeeDee Lamb and Jake Ferguson are ultimately why Dallas came up short, but there were a lot of positives to take.

Of course, those moral victories don't mean anything if the Cowboys can't beat the lowly NY Giants this Sunday. After an offseason of building up hype, the Giants turned in a 21-6 dud against the Commanders, failing to score a touchdown and mustering less than 250 yards of offense.

How bad was the performance? Head coach Brian Daboll is unsure if Russell Wilson or rookie Jaxson Dart will start against Dallas.

Cowboys left in limbo after Giants fail to name Week 2 starting QB

"We're going to get home and look at our game," Daboll said when asked if he's considering starting Dart this week, via ESPN's Jordan Raanan.

On one hand, the Giants' dysfunction is music to Cowboys fans' ears. Having a quarterback controversy after game one is typically reserved for the worst the NFL has to offer. It seems New York is headed for another lousy season.

On the other hand, though, it's far from ideal not knowing which quarterback to plan for. It's obviously much easier to plan for one QB than two or three.

Matt Eberflus should have his defense ready to face Wilson or Dart, or potentially even Jameis Winston if Daboll thinks it's too soon to throw Dart out there.

All told, it would be utterly ridiculous if the Giants pull the plug on Wilson. They spent all summer anointing Wilson as their starter. While Wilson is simply average at this stage of his career, it would send a pretty crazy message to bench the 36-year-old after one game.

That leads us to believe Wilson will be under center. However, Cowboys fans need to keep in mind that Daboll is coaching for his job. It's unclear if owner John Mara would fire him midseason, but the lack of job security could incentivize him to play Dart earlier than he planned. Playing Dart would likely buy Daboll at least the rest of the regular season.

The Cowboys won't be kept in limbo for long, but this is something to watch early in the week, as there's a chance the Giants trot out a different quarterback Sunday in Dallas.
