Jalen Carter spitting incident: Eagles coach comments as NFL discipline looms

As Jalen Carter awaits the NFL’s decision after spitting on Dak Prescott last week, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni reiterated that any team discipline will remain private.

Carter made headlines in the worst way last Thursday vs. Dallas when the All-Pro defensive tackle was ejected six seconds into the season opener for spitting on Prescott.

Sirianni said after the game that the Eagles would handle the issue “in-house.” He maintained that stance on Monday when he met with reporters.

“I’m going to keep everything that I do with him private, regardless if you see it Sunday or not,” Sirianni said. “Every conversation, whether it’s a personal conversation, a disciplinary thing, those things will always be handled privately. I just think that’s the way to go about doing team business, when you’re doing things with a football team.”

Carter is still awaiting word from the NFL on his impending discipline. A fine is expected. And though a suspension is possible ahead of Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, there isn’t precedent for suspending players for spitting incidents.

In 2006, former Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens was fined $35,000 for spitting on Falcons defensive back DeAngelo Hall. In 1997, Broncos linebacker Bill Romanowski was fined $7,500 for spitting on 49ers wide receiver J.J. Stokes.

If Carter was suspended, he could — and likely would — appeal through the NFLPA.
