Newcastle United have been handed a post-summer transfer window boost regarding a Premier League star whose deadline day move collapsed.
After a rough start to the summer, the Magpies enjoyed a positive transfer window, adding six senior players, including record signing Nick Woltemade, who could be in line to make their debut against Wolves on Saturday.
Newcastle United also welcomed players like Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey and Yoane Wissa to improve their attacking options.
Additionally, Newcastle signed Malick Thiaw from AC Milan for around £34m. The 24-year-old was the subject of talks over a move in 2024, but a deal collapsed when the two clubs could not agree on the transfer fee.
Thiaw was an alternative to Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who came close to joining the Magpies during last summer’s transfer window. However, the Eagles rejected bids up to £70m before the window closed.
Now, a new update has been shared on Guehi’s transfer status, giving Newcastle a glimmer of hope.

Liverpool are not set to re-explore a deal for Marc Guehi again
On deadline day, Liverpool agreed a £35m fee with Palace to sign Marc Guehi. However, the defender did not make the move as Palace were unable to find a suitable replacement for him.
The 25-year-old has just one year left on his contract at Palace, and has made it clear that he will not be renewing it, enabling any interested parties to explore a move in January.

According to The Times, Liverpool will not be re-entering talks for Guehi during the January transfer window. The report states that Liverpool will only explore a deal for the centre-back on a free transfer next summer.

Liverpool’s stance means that Newcastle could steal a march on the player they were so desperate to sign last summer, but with Thiaw now on Tyneside, it remains to be seen whether Eddie Howe even wants to sign another defender.
Guehi would bring considerably more quality to Newcastle’s backline and allow Howe to focus on other deals if he were able to bring him to Tyneside.
What Marc Guehi said about his failed Newcastle United move in 2024
The Magpies do not necessarily need Guehi, but he would still be a very welcome addition on Tyneside. A club captain at a young age, who recently guided his team to a first major trophy in their history, it is a no-brainer if the opportunity arises.
Had he joined in 2024, Guehi could have been part of the Newcastle side that won the Carabao Cup in March. Instead, Dan Burn and Fabian Schar kept things tight at the back to help win the club’s first trophy since 1969.
Guehi has previously spoken about the interest from Newcastle. Including in an interview with Sky Sports in November.
“I’d say yes and no,” Guehi said when asked if the transfer speculation was distracting.
“When you’re constantly reading things about yourself, it can be distracting for some people.
“But I’m just glad I have a good support system around me – my family, the club, my friends. It’s important to have that humility and focus on the task at hand.
“Palace have given me every single thing in the world and I’m completely grateful to them. I just want to repay them by doing my absolute best.”
