Sesko's struggles: Man United marksman still waiting for first goal of the campaign

Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko drew another blank on Monday evening, as his Slovenia side suffered a 3-0 defeat to Switzerland in a 2026 World Cup qualification fixture.

The 22-year-old failed to add to the 16 goals that he has scored for his national side in either of their September fixtures, and the forward has now failed to register in his last five appearances for his country.

Sesko is also without a goal in his opening four games for Man United, although he has only started one of those fixtures - the second-round EFL Cup fixture with Grimsby Town on August 27.

In the Premier League, the striker, who joined from RB Leipzig in a £74m deal in August, has featured off the bench against Arsenal, Fulham and Burnley, and it would be fair to say that it has been a slow start to his career at Old Trafford.

Sesko would have been hopeful of using the international break to gain some momentum, and his two performances against Sweden and Switzerland were, on the whole, positive.

Sesko is yet to get off the mark for club or country this season

However, it is now six games for club and country without a goal during the 2025-26 campaign.

According to Sofascore, Sesko managed just one shot on target against Switzerland, while he had only 21 touches and lost possession on seven occasions.

Sesko won just one of his three ground duels, but he won both of his aerial duels, while he made three clearances to help his team out defensively.

The striker's pass success rate was only 58% on Monday, completing seven of his 12 passes, but two of those were key passes, and he was his team's standout player on a tough night.

Man United head coach Ruben Amorim now has a tough decision to make for the Manchester derby, as Sesko will believe that he is ready to be brought into the side for Sunday's Premier League contest.

Much will depend on the fitness of both Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount, and firm updates on the duo are unlikely to arrive until Amorim speaks to the media on Friday afternoon.
