Broncos Urged To Make Blockbuster Trade For Embattled $90 Million All-Pro

After just one game of the 2025 NFL regular season, there are a few things we can say for certain about the Denver Broncos.

One is that they have a Super Bowl worthy defense.

Another is that they have an offense that, while improved in one spot, seems to be more of the same old struggles at others.

Specifically, after an offseason of hearing how much they improved, the Broncos seem to be facing some of the same issues they had on offense in 2024.

Yes, they have a legitimate WR1 option in Courtland Sutton. Beyond that, they have what amounts to an amalgamation of a sort-of-serviceable WR3 split between like 3-4 players.

That’s not going to cut it for a team that has the opportunity to be a true contender, and definitely not after free agent tight end Evan Engram injured his calf in a 20-12, season opening win over the Tennessee Titans on September 7.

All of that points to the Broncos becoming a team that could and should be looking to make a trade to shore up their wide receivers room … and if that’s the case why not swing for the fences?

Broncos Could Pull Off Blockbuster Trade

When it comes to finances, the only thing holding back the Broncos is the salary cap — no little hurdle — but if they can make it work that way, they can make it work. That’s because the people who own the team, the Walton/Penner family, are some of the richest people in the world.

The Broncos and the Penners have shown the willingness to make a blockbuster trade in the past — albeit a disastrous one — when they made the trade with the Seattle Seahawks for quarterback Russell Wilson in 2022.

In this case, they could make another big time deal that works out a little better and trade for disgruntled Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill — a 31-year-old former NFL All-Pro on a terrible team who probably has 2-3 good to great seasons left in him. Just not in Miami. Because they suck.

The cost of a deal for Hill would be steep, starting with the approximately $63.6 million he’s owed over the next 2 seasons as part of the 3-year, $90 million contract extension he signed before last season.

Getting some relief there — either from Hill or from the Dolphins picking up a portion of the salary — would be a big step in the right direction.

From there, it’s just compensation in terms of manpower. If the Broncos could stack second day picks and a starter or high-profile backup for the Dolphins — a player with a few years left on a rookie deal like cornerback Riley Moss — then it might work.

Hill, Dolphins Handed Broncos All Time Beatdown

If your memory can go back a mere 2 years, you’ll recall that it was Hill and the Dolphins who delivered the Broncos one of the NFL’s all time beatdowns.

During Week 3 of the 2023 regular season — the third game of the Sean Payton era — the Broncos traveled to Miami and walked away with a 70-22 loss in which Hill lit up the Denver secondary to the tune of 9 receptions for 157 yards and 1 touchdown.

That was part of an incredible 726 yards of total offense the Broncos gave up that day that was split almost evenly between rushing and passing.
