Drake Maye isn’t too concerned about his alma mater’s coach banning his current team’s scouts from practices.
“It’s unfortunate for them. But it’s coach (Bill) Belichick’s program, so he does what needs to do,” the Patriots quarterback said during his weekly appearance on “WEEI Afternoons.”
Belichick reportedly banned Patriots scouts from attending UNC practices. The Tar Heels didn’t deny it and added it was “clear I’m not welcome there.”
“And they aren’t welcome at ours,” Belichick said. “Pretty simple.”
The animosity between Belichick and the Krafts began before he departed New England in January 2024.
Multiple sources told MassLive’s Mark Daniels that Belichick’s ire began to fester after he was told he couldn’t retain Matt Patricia as New England’s offensive coordinator despite an ugly 2022 season. In 2023,Belichick became upsetthat Jerod Mayo signed a contract that named him the coach in waiting and he refused to speak to Mayo.
Maye said he’s following and cheering for UNC despite the animosity between Belichick and the Patriots.
“I check in on them and watch their games. So just pulling them for them," he said.
The Tar Heels got their first win against Charlotte after suffering a blowout loss to TCU in their home opener.
