Manchester United could welcome back a key player for their upcoming games with Chelsea and Brentford.

Manchester United have been handed a potential fitness boost ahead of their upcoming games with Chelsea and Brentford. The Red Devils have had a very mixed start, winning, drawing and losing in their first three outings, with their sole win coming in a narrow 3-2 win over newly-promoted Burnley before the break, with Ruben Amorim’s men bouncing back from a shock Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town.

After the break United face a tough run of fixtures that could set the tone for their season, facing Manchester City, Chelsea and Brentford across the next three weekends.

Ahead of those games, United were handed a concern when Diogo Dalot was sent back from Portugal duty with a fresh injury, but there is better news in relation to summer signing Matheus Cunha. Cunha limped off against Burnley last time out, and Amorim said after the game: “It was hard to lose Cunha and Mason Mount, because Mason Mount played 30 minutes with an injury. I’m concerned about that, because they are so important for us. We will see.” he added in a separate update: “I don’t know [how they are], I don’t know. We will check them. We need those guys really bad to be really competitive.”

The good news for the Red Devils is that Cunha has posted on his Instagram story working out in the gym, captioning it “Sundays”. That would suggest Cunha is working towards a return, and even if he doesn’t make it back to face City this weekend, the Brazilian will surely be hopeful of playing against Chelsea and Brentford. Naturally, the forward did not travel with the Brazil camp during this international window as a result of his injury.

Cunha on his dream move

Cunha joined United on a £62.5million in the summer, and explaining why he made the move, he told the club website: “Maybe outside, I think maybe my decision, they don’t understand. But when you have always dreamed to play here, it’s easier to pick this decision. For me, no-one else is like United. Of course, I know it’s been a hard season for everyone. I think my decision shows what this club is for me, and what I believe this club can be.

“It is hard to find a way to explain this club for me. My house didn’t have the channel to watch the Premier League. My cousin’s house didn’t have the channel. He’s older than me and he supports United and he showed me the way, to start to watch the Premier League and to need to support United.

“Only in my grandma’s house, we can watch the Premier League, so we organised to go every weekend. And for me, it was always a bit inside of me, this club. When I play with him in the street, on the beach, on the gravel pitch, we called these pitches ‘Old Trafford’. Imagine! So, wow, it’s so hard to be here now, thinking about the past — it’s very emotional for me.”
