Newcastle United saw bids rejected for Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen in the summer transfer window.

The international break is almost over with Premier League action returning this weekend.
It’s been a slow start to the new season for Newcastle United so far, with two 0-0 draws against Aston Villa and Leeds United sandwiching a dramatic 3-2 loss against Liverpool.
Eddie Howe return to action on Saturday when they take on Wolves at St James’ Park. Vitor Pereira’s men are yet to pick up a point so far this season.
The game could also see some debuts for Newcastle with Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa joning late in the transfer window which closed last week. While the window is no longer open, it doesn’t stop transfer talk over potential comings and goings around clubs.
As we wait for the return of the Premier League, here is a look at a couple of the latest stories and our own thoughts on the situation.
Strand Larsen update
Wolves have opened talks with striker Jorgen Strand Larsen over a new contract, according to the Telegraph.
Newcastle made the forward a priority target during the summer transfer window, but saw two bids of £50m and £55m turned down by the midlands outfit as they searched for potential replacements for Alexander Isak.
It’s reported that Wolves are now set to offer the striker an improved deal with the player expected to commit his future to the club. It is added that the new deal is unlikely to include a release clause.
ChronLive says: A potential move for Strand Larsen may be one that Newcastle have to move on from going into future transfer windows. Wolves made it clear that they weren’t prepared to accept any offers during the summer and if the striker commits to a new deal at Molineux it will put the club in an even stronger position.
That is of course if Wolves’ poor start to the season continues. Suffering relegation at the end of the season means that Strand Larsen may then be available in the summer.
Nick Woltemade defended
Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has come out to defend summer signing Nick Woltemade following criticism for the striker’s performances for Germany over the international break.
Writing in his column for Sky Germany, he said: “I’ll defend Nick Woltemade and Florian Wirtz. The turmoil and the adjustment to a new environment, these things are affecting the players’ minds. They still need time to adjust to the new situation.”
Woltemade is now set to return to Newcastle and prepare for a potential debut for the club when Eddie Howe’s side take on Wolves at the weekend.
ChronLive says: While Woltemade may have struggled to make too much of an impact on the international stage over the last couple of days, he did still manage to get an assist in the win over Northern Ireland.
He does need to be given time to adapt to his new environment, having only spent a few days at St James’ Park so far. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind for the player and that should be taken into account.
