Wolves have, reportedly, opened contract renewal talks with Jorgen Strand Larsen. The decision has been made shortly after Newcastle United's attempts to sign the striker this summer.

In Newcastle's mission to sign two strikers before the summer window closed, they landed on Strand Larsen as a target. The 25-year-old had only just completed a permanent £23m switch to Molineux mere months ago, though last season scored 14 Premier League goals while on loan from Spanish outfit Celta Vigo.

The Magpies had an opening £50m offer swiftly rejected - and the same happened with a follow-up £55m offer - while the overall outcome was Strand Larsen staying a Wolves player by the time the deadline passed last week.

Now, it would appear the Midlands club want to put a stop to any continued speculation regarding their No.9, as The Telegraph report the beginning of contract renewal talks with the player.

Strand Larsen is expected to accept improved terms and commit his long-term future to Wolves.

This comes after the club's chairman, Jeff Shi, shared a public answer outlining that it was never his intention to allow such an 'important' star to depart so close to the deadline.

He said: "No, never, never considered to sell him in the window. Jorgen is a very good boy. Maybe you know him, right? So a very good boy, very honest, and also very generous.

"He's a team work for sure. So I have no doubt about him. And sometimes maybe the market, of course, every person has some chance to come in your career, but he is a boy, I believe 100 per cent he will forget about that, then get up, then move on, then commit to the team immediately and after the window shuts.

"So, you will see him play and perform very well."

Eddie Howe ended up landing Yoane Wissa as their so-called replacement for Callum Wilson - instead of Strand Larsen - on deadline day. The club conducted a £50m deal with Brentford.

A club-record transfer also saw Nick Woltemade arrive before the summer window closed - with Alexander Isak eventually sold to Liverpool for a British-record £125m sum.
