“Shanahan and special teams coordinator Brant Boyer had said Moody and Joseph would compete for the kicker role throughout the preseason, but the 49ers cut the veteran kicker ahead of their preseason opener. Shanahan cited lack of camp depth at other positions due to injuries as a major reason why the competition was abruptly cut short. Joseph has not since signed with another team and remains a free agent.”
