Jamie Carragher offers brutal verdict on Jadon Sancho: 'He doesn't have much ability'

Jamie Carragher still does not know what Jadon Sancho's 'standout quality' is.

The former Liverpool defender gave a damning verdict on the 25-year-old, who completed a season-long switch to Aston Villa on deadline day after entering the final year of his Manchester United contract.

Sancho spent last season on loan at Chelsea from Man United and has now been sent on loan to Aston Villa for the current campaign, with his ability questioned by leading football analyst Carragher

He could make his debut for Unai Emery's side as early as this weekend when they face Everton away from home.

His arrival followed Chelsea's decision to decline their obligation to sign him permanently in the summer.

It followed five goals and 10 assists in 41 appearances for the Blues during his loan spell last term.

And Carragher remains unconvinced by the winger's ability as he explained on the latest episode of the Overlap.

"It's funny with Jadon Sancho. Back when he was at Borussia Dortmund, Gary Neville and I were on a show where we had to pick an England squad.

"We hadn't seen too much of him – he was doing well in the Champions League, but we left him out.

"Everyone on social media was saying, 'How can you not pick Sancho?'

"I'm still not sure there's that much ability there. He's okay, but I don't really see what his standout quality is.

"With Marcus Rashford, even though I've criticised him, I can picture his pace, his shooting, his free kicks, the power he puts into the ball.

"With Sancho, I just don't know what his thing is – I can't picture it in my head."

Meanwhile, he has not added to his 23 caps for England since a 5-0 victory in Andorra during 2022 World Cup qualifying.

Sancho a 'weird signing' says Scholes

Carragher was not the only member of the Fan Debate panel to share their thoughts on Sancho.

Paul Scholes added that he is a 'weird signing' for Villa having joined during the final moments of the summer transfer window.

The 11-time Premier League winner explained: "Emery might be good for him, but he is a weird signing.

"We talked about the size of [the] pitch might be an issue for him, Villa Park is massive. A lack of pace, a lack of legs, it concerns you.

"He has got ability, but what is his strength? Does he cut inside and smash it in the top corner? Can he beat a man? He possibly links with a centre forward.

"He probably has the skill to go past someone, but they catch him. He can’t go on again."
