‘Big question mark…’ - Belgian journalist drops worrying verdict on Lammens move to Man Utd

Senne Lammens faces a 'big question mark' over how he will cope with the pressure at Manchester United this season, Belgian journalist Axel Brisart has warned.

The 23-year-old shot-stopper arrived at Old Trafford on transfer deadline day as Man United’s fifth and final summer signing, following the likes of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Diego Leon and Benjamin Sesko.

Brisart claims Lammens’ move from Royal Antwerp is a 'very big step' for the Belgian, who only became Antwerp’s first-choice goalkeeper last season, keeping 10 clean sheets in 44 appearances.

He claims Lammens will face significant pressure from the start at Old Trafford, where both Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana struggled to impress under Ruben Amorim.

Onana, who joined from Inter Milan in 2023, is now close to departing, with Turkish side Trabzonspor set to confirm his arrival on a season-long loan with no option to buy included.

Lammens’ Move to Man Utd ‘Very Big Step’

Senne Lammens in action for Royal Antwerp

Brisart, speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast, warned that Lammens may struggle to cope with the pressure following his move from Royal Antwerp to Man United on deadline day, considering how two previous goalkeeping signings have fared at Old Trafford:

“It's a very big step, I think. I also think maybe even for Senne Lammens himself, it's maybe even a question mark. I mean, it's very difficult to simulate the amount of pressure he'll be dealing with at Manchester United.

“I mean, of course, Antwerp is a big club in Belgium, but you can't compare it, right?

“So to me, that's the big question mark on how he will be dealing with this pressure, especially after the whole goalkeeper drama of the last couple of weeks.

“I mean, everybody will be looking at him if he's going to start. So that's a big question mark. I think he has the qualities, and he's confident right now.

“But again, the big question mark is about how he will how will he deal with just the amount of pressure? That's a big question mark.”

United signed Lammens on deadline day for an initial £18m plus add-ons, with the Belgium international penning a five-year contract.

Lammens made 64 appearances for Royal Antwerp before departing and helped them win the Belgian Super Cup in 2023.

He was named in the Belgium national team squad for the first time in March but has yet to win his first cap, with Thibaut Courtois and Nottingham Forest keeper Matz Sels ahead of him in the pecking order.

Man United have gathered four points from their opening three Premier League games and will return to action with a derby against Manchester City on Sunday.
