Manchester United made a late move to sign Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller, and they should be trying again in January.
During the summer transfer window, United were in the market for further options in the middle of the park, but they failed to get a deal over the line. GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba was a player of interest, but the Red Devils failed to pursue a deal with the Seagulls demanding a hefty amount to allow him to depart.
After failing to get a deal over the line, it wouldn't be a surprise to see United prioritise the signing of a new midfielder in 2026, but Baleba's price tag is unlikely to drop. As a result, finding a cheaper alternative could be the ideal move for the Red Devils, and Stiller is a player who would cost significantly less money.
Man Utd Make Late Move to Sign Angelo Stiller
Angelo Stiller in action for Stuttgart
According to a report from Caught Offside, Manchester United made a late move to sign Stuttgart midfielder Stiller in the summer transfer window. The German international wanted to ensure he was a first-team regular heading into 2026, where he will be hoping to impress ahead of the World Cup.
Stiller has a £32m release clause in his contract, but Stuttgart have the option to cancel it for around £1.6m. Stiller is currently content at Stuttgart, but it will be interesting to see whether that changes. The German midfielder, described as a 'baller', could be the ideal cheaper alternative for United if they are still unwilling to match Brighton's asking price for Baleba.
The 24-year-old could be the ideal profile for United, a defensive midfielder who is comfortable progressing play from deep. He's also still only 24 years old, and has over 100 games at Bundesliga level, so he's a good profile in terms of age.
Considering his reasonable release clause, you could certainly argue that he's better value for money than Baleba. The German midfielder does have no experience when it comes to Premier League football, but Baleba is still young himself. Either way, United need to make a move to sign a new option in the middle of the park in 2026, and with Baleba potentially out of reach financially, Stiller could be the ideal man to bring in for Ruben Amorim's side.
