Opinion: What Ange Postecoglou said about Nottingham Forest's squad in April could now worry fans

Ange Postecoglou is the frontrunner to replace Nuno Espirito Santo at Nottingham Forest, but his previous comments about the squad might worry fans.

TBR Football confirmed today that Postecoglou is the leading candidate to take the vacant Nottingham Forest job, which would see him return to the game just months after parting ways with Tottenham Hotspur.

Postecoglou won the Europa League last season with Spurs, but was still replaced by Thomas Frank at the end of the season following a poor Premier League campaign.

TBR Football learned that Nuno clashed with football chief Edu over numerous deals during the summer, and now Postecoglou is in line to take over the squad that has been assembled.

Ange Postecoglou believes Nuno Espirito Santo created a game plan to suit Nottingham Forest’s squad

Postecoglou is well aware of the Nottingham Forest squad as he’s coached Tottenham against them twice, winning two and losing the other two.

Before their last meeting back in April, the Australian coach spoke to the media about the squad that Nuno had put together, and what he thought of them.

“Brilliant. Exciting. I think they’ve always had the quality in the team, but since Nuno’s got there, they’ve come up with a game plan that suits the players they have.”

It’s clear that Postecoglou believes there are some good players within the squad, and Nottingham Forest’s fantastic 2024-25 campaign certainly proves that.

Nuno built his team to play a specific style of football, which produced results, but that’s likely to change at the City Ground.

Evangelos Marinakis wants Nottingham Forest to be more attacking, which explains why Postecoglou has been his first choice, but that will worry fans.

Ange Postecoglou delivers a different style to Nuno Espirito Santo

While Postecoglou was obviously complimentary about the Nottingham Forest squad with his comments, his final line might be a worry for fans.

Postecoglou tends to play a very attacking brand of football, which was on full display during his spell in charge of Tottenham, bringing entertainment, but defensive frailties in equal measure.

Nuno didn’t set his Nottingham Forest side up to play that way; therefore, having them adapt to such a drastic change could be problematic.

Nottingham Forest fans have expressed their frustration at Santo’s firing, which means Postecoglou could be facing an uphill battle from the start.

The Portuguese coach guided them to a much higher finish than Postecoglou managed at Tottenham last season, which means he will already be facing an uphill battle in winning the fanbase over.

Totally transforming the style of play when Postecoglou’s already admitted that Nuno put together a team suited to his style is going to be a risk at this stage in the season, especially with a transfer window so far away.
