September 9 – Former Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecologou has swiftly returned to an English Premier League (EPL) dugout after being named as Nuno Espirito Santo’s replacement at Nottingham Forest.
The 60-year-old Australian is set to take charge for Forest’s clash with Arsenal on Saturday and ahead of the club’s venture into the Europa League – a trophy he lifted with Spurs just three months ago.
The move comes after former coach Nuno departed yesterday evening following a high-profile fallout with owner Evangelos Marinakis. This marked the end of the Portuguese manager’s 73-game stint in charge, having taken the reins in December 2023.
On paper, the departure has left a few scratching their heads, even after Forest were thumped 3-0 at home to West Ham in their last EPL outing.
Under Santo, the club made their long-awaited return to European competition and have recaptured some of their long-lost Premier League pedigree, spending most of last season in the Champions League qualification spots before dropping out of the race late in the campaign.
His replacement Postecoglou has a reputation for being outspoken, which could spell trouble for how Marinakis wants to work with his managers, as shown by the whirlwind sacking of Santo.
Fortunately for Australian, though, he already seems to be in the Greek’s good books. Postecoglou, who has Greek heritage and previously managed Panachaiki in the nation’s lower divisions, was recently praised by Marinakis when presenting the head coach with an award in Greece in July, as cited by Neos Kosmos.
“What I want to say about Ange is that he has spoken about Greece many times, he is proud to be Greek and in the great success he had with Tottenham by winning the Europa League, he spoke about Greece,” Marinakis said.
“A man who not only does not hide his origin but is also proud of it. What he achieved, he did with a team that has not won any titles, it has had a very difficult time in recent years. In this huge success that the whole world saw, he promoted Greece.”
It doesn’t start easy for the Aussie. Saturday’s debut is expected to cause a few sparks, with him travelling to the home of former arch-rivals Arsenal.
