Angus Gunn recalls 'difficult' summer after Norwich City exit and Nottingham Forest move

Former Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn has lifted the lid on his turbulent summer.

Norwich City have made a hot-and-cold start to Championship life under Liam Manning with two wins and two defeats from their opening four league games.

The Canaries endured a hectic summer transfer window, both in terms of incomings to Carrow Road and multiple big-name departures.

Thankfully for Manning, Norwich kept hold of Josh Sargent after Burnley and Wolfsburg’s interest in the in-form striker.

One of the lower-profile exits from Norwich this summer was veteran goalkeeper Angus Gunn’s exit on a free transfer to Nottingham Forest, and the Scotsman has now lifted the lid on his “difficult” summer.

Angus Gunn discusses ‘difficult’ summer after Norwich City exit

Amid the summer upheaval at Carrow Road following Manning’s appointment, Gunn left the Canaries as a free agent upon the expiry of his contract.

The Canaries spent little time searching for his replacement after Norwich signed Vladan Kovacevic for £2m, and the former Sporting shot-stopper has already shown sparkling form this season, particularly against Portsmouth and Blackburn Rovers.

In terms of Gunn, the Scottish international joined Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest despite West Brom holding talks with Gunn, with several Championship sides interested in his services.

After Norwich failed to give the boyhood Canaries fan a new contract, Gunn suffered an injury on Scotland duty amid moving to Forest on a short-term deal, and the fit-again goalkeeper has lifted the lid on his “difficult” summer.

As quoted by The Pink Un, Gunn said: “It’s been interesting. It was a long summer for me. It definitely wasn’t a great experience.

“It’s been a difficult time all round knowing that I was out of contract going into that game and then picking the injury up. Thankfully, it was nothing too serious. I had to have a lot of patience.

“I listened to different offers and, to be honest, I was sitting there not really knowing what was going to happen. Obviously, the Forest thing came up and it was a chance to stay in England.

“It’s only a short-term thing, but coming away with the national team gives me a good chance to get games in. I just wanted to come out confident and hopefully stamp my authority on the position.

“I was really proud of my performance. Other than picking the three points up, it couldn’t have gone any better.”

Gunn has yet to feature for Forest, but has kept two clean sheets in quick succession for Scotland in World Cup qualifiers against Denmark and Belarus, showcasing that the shot-stopper can still operate at the highest level after a testing time at Carrow Road.

Angus Gunn back to best after testing season at Norwich City

We at EFL Analysis thought that Gunn was a good option for West Brom, but Forest beat the lofty Championship interest in his signature to be their back-up goalkeeper.

With Gunn available as a free signing, Ryan Dilks of the Second Tier podcast said: “I’m not sure there’ll be many occasions where Championship clubs can get a goalkeeper of his ability, on a free transfer.

“Yes, he’s coming off the back of a bad season, but if you get him back to the goalkeeper who we saw 12 months prior, then that’s a brilliant, brilliant pick up for someone.”

Unfortunately for Gunn, last season was one to forget for the Scotsman after he conceded 42 goals in 35 outings for Norwich, managing just seven clean sheets.

The Scotsman has set about proving Norwich’s decision to let him go wrong with his two outstanding displays for Scotland, which have continued his international career prospects.
