'It's not working': Jamie Carragher makes Everton and West Ham prediction after PSR issues for…

Everton will be returning to action this weekend for the first time since the summer transfer window shut.

David Moyes will be keen to keep the positive forward going when they come up against Aston Villa on Saturday.

The summer window marked The Friedkin Group’s first as the new owners on Merseyside.

And it was a successful window for the Blues, with Moyes delighted by Everton’s summer business through the additions of Jack Grealish and Tyler Dibling.

For the first time in years, finances have not been an issue for Everton in the summer transfer window.

And Jamie Carragher believes there could be some frustrating times to come on Merseyside if the Friedkins can continue to spend in the market.

However, his latest concerns will certainly resonate more with Everton fans as Premier League clubs continue to be hit by PSR frustrations.

Speaking on The Overlap, Carragher thinks Everton could soon hit the same issues as Newcastle United and Aston Villa in not being able to compete with the big six.

“When you look at an Aston Villa or a Newcastle, we’d both agree both managers have done amazing jobs,” he said.

“Spent a bit of money, but nothing reckless. They’ve got to a certain point, and it feels like they can’t go any further.

“That will be the same if Everton get their act together, West Ham, those type of clubs that we don’t see as the ‘big six’.

“Where can you ever have that hope that you might win the Premier League or even get into the Champions League. I do think it is fair to have discussions around PSR. Feels like it’s not working right now for a lot of Premier League teams and you lose that little bit of hope.”

Everton have a significant purchase clause for Grealish, but there will have to be serious financial conversations had ahead of next summer.

Fast forwarding 12 months from now, the Friedkins will hope there is one major difference in Everton’s finances.

Everton hold new stadium advantage over Newcastle and Aston Villa

Aston Villa are being massively held back by PSR, which is limiting their ability to spend in the transfer windows.

Everton will hold a big advantage over the likes of Villa following the opening of the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Already, Everton have a big naming rights deal in place, which will provide the Blues with improved PSR headroom.

That is just one of the methods which the Friedkins have utilised to boost the club’s stance against the financial regulations.

Everton have also sold their Women’s team, for example.

Although there is certainly some logic behind Carragher’s point, the new Everton owners are looking to put plans in place to avoid PSR proving a big issue in the coming years.
