Arsenal are reportedly the frontrunners to land a Man United transfer target in midfield.
Ruben Amorim had a relatively good transfer window, addressing several needs in attack and in goal. However, one area that Manchester United failed to improve is in central midfield, as they were unable to sign top target Carlos Baleba.
One of which, they reportedly made a last-minute bid for in the transfer window before it closed at the beginning of September. However, Arsenal are now reportedly in the race to sign him.
Arsenal ‘leading the race’ for Man United target Stiller
According to the Express, United made a ‘last-minute bid’ to sign Stiller from Stuttgart, but they were nowhere near the German club’s price demands of £52m. The same report says that Premier League rivals Arsenal are now leading the race to sign the 24-year-old, and could make a move for him in the January window.
This could be a major blow for United, as the Gunners can offer Champions League football, and potentially a Premier League title if all goes well for them this season. The Red Devils would have to offer Stiller the promise of more regular first-team football, something that he wouldn’t get at Arsenal due to them having Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice in midfield.
Which other midfielders could Man United target in midfield?
It has been suggested that Palace would want at least £100m for Wharton, meaning that United would certainly have to sell more players before they could afford a deal. If Mainoo still wants to leave in January, that could emerge as a possible option. Otherwise, Sporting CP’s Morten Hjulmand remains a name linked to Old Trafford.
The Danish midfielder played under Amorim at the Portuguese club, and has become one of their most reliable and trusted players. He is more of a physical midfielder compared to Stiller, as he is a tall, strong defensive midfielder who likes to win the ball back. He is also great in the air, something that could prove useful for United.
It is not clear as to which midfielder is United’s first choice, or whether they will sign one in January. But, if it is Stiller, it seems they will face significant competition to sign him.
