Chiefs' Andy Reid Sends Strong Message to NFL After Chargers Controversy

The Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Los Angeles Chargers in their season opener last Friday, and the game did not end without controversy.

In the middle of the affair, Chargers defensive lineman Teair Tart slapped Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce in the helmet, receiving an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty as a result. However, he was not ejected because Tart used an open-hand strike instead of a closed fist.

This puzzled Kansas City head coach Andy Reid, who has questions for the NFL following the incident.

"I don't understand that rule," Reid said, via Saad Yousuf of The Athletic. "I guess it's open-hand, fist, whatever, I don't know. I don't know what their decision was on that. But he definitely got hit in the head pretty hard, whether it was an open fist or a closed fist."

Reid declined to expound upon his point.

"I can't get into all of that," Reid said. "I don't have enough money to do all of that."

In other words, Reid didn't want to risk receiving a fine from the league. He added that he would work out with the NFL.

The Chiefs fell to the Chargers by a score of 27-21. Kelce logged a couple of catches for 47 yards and a touchdown in the defeat, which proved rather costly for Kansas City as it lost wide receiver Xavier Worthy to a dislocated shoulder.

It marked the second time the Chiefs have lost their season opener in the last three years. Kansas City dropped its Week 1 matchup with the Detroit Lions in 2023. It still managed to go on and win the Super Bowl that year, however.

The Chiefs will host the Philadelphia Eagles in their home opener this Sunday in a rematch of last year's Super Bowl. We'll see if Kansas City can exact some revenge.
