'Boom': Ben Foster is loving what Newcastle United have been doing to start games this season

· 9 September 2025, 19:30

**Newcastle United are still waiting for their first win of the season after two draws and a defeat so far in the opening three games.**

The Magpies take on Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday in a 3 pm kick-off at St James' Park, where they'll be hoping to register their first win of the campaign.

Newcastle have played very well in their opening games despite the lack of results. In the games against Aston Villa and Liverpool, particularly, Newcastle were fantastic, tactically astute and outclassed their opposition. However, goals were just too hard to come by.

The game against Leeds was less impressive, but there was still a strong feeling that Newcastle would have won had they had a decent striker on the pitch.

Ben Foster loves Newcastle's new kick-off routine

Each game saw Newcastle deploying a new tactic, though, which they seem to have lifted directly from European Champions, Paris Saint-Germain, and that's having Sandro Tonali launch the ball out for a high throw-in directly from the kick-off, allowing the team to put pressure on the opposition straight away.

Former Premier League goalkeeper turned podcaster, Ben Foster, is seemingly a huge fan of the tactic, going by his comments on his Cycling GK YouTube channel.

> “They’ve been taking a page out of PSG’s book. Boom, straight out there for a throw-in. Get up and block it in lads. It’s as simple as that.

>

> “Everyone is on the front-foot. He hasn’t even kicked the ball yet.”

Newcastle want to be on the front foot straight away

Newcastle are notorious for their high press under Eddie Howe, so it only makes sense that the team would be better suited putting themselves in that position as soon as possible.

It rattles teams, and it could easily force them into an error.

Now that we have Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade, we could actually have players capable of taking full advantage of those forced errors. We'll see if it works on Saturday against Wolves.
