NFL files petition in Nevada Supreme Court in response to Jon Gruden’s lawsuit

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The NFL has filed a petition for rehearing after a Nevada court ruled in favor of former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden.

Gruden, 61, accused the league of of improperly leaking racist, sexist and homophobic emails he sent while working as an ESPN announcer to force him to resign from the Raiders in 2021. His lawsuit alleges that disclosure of the emails destroyed his career and ruined endorsement contracts.

He seeks monetary damages.

In August, the Nevada Supreme Court upheld a lower court’s ruling that Gruden’s lawsuit can proceed in court than in private arbitration. According to the NFL’s petition, it claims the court overlooked “a long line of precedents” that its arbitration clause does continue past Gruden’s termination because the events in the lawsuit happened before he was fired.

The petition claims a rehearing is necessary for the court to acknowledge the NFL’s constitution to protect arbitration agreements.

Gruden coached the Raiders in Oakland from 1998 to 2001, then led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for seven years, winning a Super Bowl title in 2003. He spent several years as a TV analyst for ESPN before being hired by the Raiders again in 2018.
