NBA Insider Provides Concerning Update On Trae Young's Future With Hawks

Atlanta Hawks star guard Trae Young will soon head into his eighth season in the league. However, while that is the case, his future with the team appears uncertain.

Young is eligible for a four-year, $229 million contract; however, the Hawks have yet to extend an offer to him. With the season a little over a month away, it appears that the Hawks will do no such thing.

Because of that, ESPN NBA insider Tim MacMahon provided a murky update on Young's future with the team. MacMahon says Young's future in Atlanta is certainly in question.

"The long-term outlook for Trae Young in Atlanta is murky at the minimum at this point. This is a guy who has been the face of the Atlanta Hawks for seven years. He's averaged 25 and 10. You know, just led the league in assists. His offensive production has been elite. But there are question marks about whether this is going to, you know, be a long-term marriage."

Young has established himself as one of the best guards in the league and certainly in the conference. The 27-year-old is a three-time All-Star and has led the Hawks to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021.

However, since that moment, the Hawks have failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs or make the playoffs at all. The Hawks have missed the playoffs in the last two seasons, participating only in the Play-In Tournament.

Young may be limited on the defensive end, but his offensive prowess is among the best, especially for his size. Last season, Young averaged 24.2 points per game, 11.6 assists (a career-high), 3.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals while shooting 41.1 percent from the field and 34 percent from beyond the arc.

There is no denying Young's talent, but his efficiency has been a question throughout his career.

Heading into the season, the Hawks have high hopes for the first time in quite a while. Atlanta has a flurry of new additions, including Kristaps Porzingis, Luke Kennard and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. The hope is that they can gel to secure a great regular season and possibly embark on a deep playoff run.

Currently, Young is under contract through the 2025-26 season and has a player option for the 2026-27 season. If the Hawks don't provide Young with the offer, he may end up opting out and becoming a free agent next summer.
