Eagles’ Jalen Carter receives punishment from NFL for spitting incident

Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter has been punished by the NFL for spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott during Philadelphia’s 24-20 win over Dallas in Week 1. But it won’t sideline him for any additional games.

The NFL announced on Tuesday that Carter had been suspended one game — which was served by him being disqualified before he played a snap — and fined $57,222, in addition to the lost game check. Carter will not appeal.

Carter’s actions got him ejected before the first play of Thursday night’s game. Afterward, he publicly apologized and promised not to do it again.

But showing remorse didn’t get Carter out of trouble.

“League rules prohibiting unsportsmanlike conduct are of vital importance to everyone involved in the game,” the NFL said in a statement. The NFL has been clear with players, clubs, and the NFLPA that it plans to place particular emphasis on sportsmanship this season."

The Eagles struggled without Carter in the first half of their Week 1 victory, allowing 20 points to the Cowboys. The defense rebounded and pitched a shutout in the second half. But it doesn’t change the fact that Carter put them in a tough position.

Philadelphia is lucky that Carter didn’t get suspended for its Week 2 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Carter and his fellow defensive linemen dominated Kansas City’s offensive line in the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX victory.

He is one of the best defensive players in the NFL and could become the league’s highest-paid DT next offseason. However, Cater needs to play smarter to reach his potential.
