49ers have cut their kicker after his bad season debut

The San Francisco 49ers are in the market for a new kicker.

The Niners on Tuesday cut kicker Jake Moody, who had a rough season debut. Moody went 1/3 on his field goal attempts on Sunday, though he made both of his extra point attempts. Moody missed a 27-yard field goal with a minute left in the second quarter. Then he had a 36-yard field goal attempt blocked in the third quarter.

Luckily San Francisco still beat Seattle 17-13 despite missing the two kicks from close-range.

Getting cut by the Niners is a very disappointing outcome for Moody, especially considering how his career with the team began. He was a third-round pick by San Francisco in 2023 and began his career going 21/25 as a rookie. He also went 60/61 on extra points.

Last year, Moody went 24/34 in 14 games, though he was 32/33 on extra points.

A turning point in Moody’s career seemed to come when he got injured in an October game against the Arizona Cardinals last year. Moody got hurt attempting to make a tackle. He was taken off the field on a cart and missed three games.

Moody was 13/14 (92.9 percent) on field goals last season prior to the injury. He was 11/20 (55 percent) afterwards. Given the way Kyle Shanahan reacted to a bad kick from Moody in the preseason, it’s no surprise that he has now been cut.
