The timing of the post kind of coincided with a shaky start to Sanders’ career. He did not suit up for the Browns’ Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals and was listed as the emergency QB. Joe Flacco, 40, earned the starting role after a competitive offseason battle. Dillon Gabriel was named QB2 following the team’s trade of Kenny Pickett to Las Vegas for a fifth-round pick.
Sanders had built momentum in early preseason action, throwing for 138 yards and two touchdowns against Carolina. That progress stalled when he tweaked his oblique during joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles in mid-August, which costed him valuable reps and Cleveland’s second preseason game. Instead of climbing the depth chart, he entered Week 1 inactive.
Flacco’s debut as a starter was uneven. He completed 31 of 45 passes for 290 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in a 17-16 loss to Cincinnati. Gabriel remained on the sideline, but is the next man up should Cleveland look to make a change.
