The Buffalo Bills made a change at punter on Tuesday.
After a successful tryout with the team, the Bills signed veteran Cameron Johnston to the 53-man roster. The 33-year-old punter was released at the end of August by the Pittsburgh Steelers after he lost the team’s punter competition to Corliss Waitman. Johnston spent one season with Pittsburgh (2024) and previously had stints with the Philadelphia Eagles (2017-2020) and Houston Texans (2021-2023).
After signing Johnston, the Bills waived punter Brad Robbins. Robbins served as Buffalo’s punter this offseason and fared well throughout the preseason, but he struggled in Week 1. Using EPA metrics, Robbins was the NFL’s worst punter on opening weekend.
Robbins has averaged 44.1 yards per punt in his career, whereas Johnston joins the Bills with a 47.3 yards per punt average.
In addition to signing Johnston, the Bills also signed kicker Matt Prater from their practice squad. After being elevated in Week 1, Robbins was a perfect 3-of-3 on field goal attempts while making both of his extra points.
In addition to hosting punters, Buffalo also hosted several defensive players for tryouts on Tuesday. Here’s the entire tryout list, via the league’s transaction wire.

In many cases, teams host tryout players weekly to build lists of potential signings in the event of injury or ineffective play throughout the regular season.
