Pittsburgh Steelers get major injury update on two key defensive players

The Pittsburgh Steelers are optimistic that cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and outside linebacker Nick Herbig will both play against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Tomlin listed Porter as questionable and said his hamstring tightened up during the team’s win over the New York Jets, but there is a lot of hope he will play and that issue was only minor.

If Porter could not play, it would be cornerback Brandin Echols who will suit up instead. Echols had to play for Porter during the rest of the game after the team held Porter out as a precaution. During those snaps, Echols played outside cornerback.

Herbig suffered a hamstring strain in the team’s second preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He missed Week 1, but was limited in practice for three straight days, signaling that he is likely to play.

I’m just taking it day by day,” Herbig said. “We’ll see how I feel. … “I feel like I have a great plan with Gabe [Amponsah], our head trainer. I think I’m progressing every day and just keep stacking days.”

The Steelers ruled out defensive tackle Derrick Harmon, safety DeShon Elliott, and inside linebacker Malik Harrison with knee injuries, and will work to divide the labor in their absence.
