Derby blow for Pep? Woes mount after suspected injury to Man City star

Manchester City have reportedly received another injury setback ahead of the Manchester derby on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s team have had a disappointing start to the new season, suffering consecutive defeats and currently sit 13th in the top flight.

Despite a 4-0 thrashing of Wolverhampton Wanderers on the opening weekend, Guardiola's side deservedly lost 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the second round in front of their supporters and then suffered a 2-1 away defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion before the international break.

Having failed to score in their previous home game at the Etihad Stadium against Spurs, the Cityzens may be weakened up front for the visit of Manchester United on September 14, following concerning scenes involving one of their players on national team duty.

Guardiola’s Man City have injury ‘concern’ ahead of derby

According to talkSPORT, Omar Marmoush might miss the match on September 14 after apparently sustaining a knee injury while on international duty with Egypt on Tuesday.

The incident that forced Marmoush off in the 10th minute of a World Cup qualifying match against Burkina Faso occurred after a robust tackle from Mohamed Zougrana.

The report states that Marmoush seemed to be in discomfort as he held his knee in pain and was replaced six minutes following the heavy tackle.

The prospect of the former Eintracht Frankfurt forward missing out against the Red Devils adds further problems to Guardiola's preparations for the derby, due to the club's increasing injury list.

Marmoush, 26, has introduced some unpredictability to the club's attack since transferring to Manchester for approximately £59m in January.

The Egypt international scored his first career hat-trick in the 4-0 victory over Newcastle United on February 15, and later scored what could be the Premier League Goal of the Season on May 20, firing a long-range shot against Bournemouth that struck the post.

Are there any other players injured at Manchester City?

Man City's reported absence of Marmoush is far from ideal, as they are already dealing with a host of doubts ahead of the derby.

Guardiola’s team are already without Ryan Cherki, who is expected to return in November from a thigh injury, while Mateo Kovacic is likely to miss out until next month due to a leg injury.

Although Kalvin Phillips's return date is unknown, City must assess several injured players ahead of Sunday's showdown, including Phil Foden, John Stones, Josko Gvardiol, Savinho, Marcus Bettinelli and Abdukodir Khusanov, all of whom are carrying some injury.

Having lost both games before the break, Man City are now six points behind defending league champions Liverpool, and they face the Red Devils knowing they could be nine points behind after just four games.
