Trade Condition for 49ers-Eagles Bryce Huff Deal Revealed

The Eagles traded edge rusher Bryce Huff to the 49ers in June.

Bryce Huff may no longer be a Philadelphia Eagle, but the defending Super Bowl champions still have a small stake in his performance.

When Huff was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in June, the reported return was a 2026 conditional fifth-round pick that could become a fourth based on Huff’s performance.

A few months later, we now know the specific terms.

“Per a source, the fifth-round pick will become a fourth-round pick if Huff has eight sacks in 2025,” the Philly Voice’s Jimmy Kempski wrote Tuesday, adding there are no other conditions included in the deal, such as snap counts.

Huff played 26 snaps in the 49ers’ Week 1 win over the Seahawks but did not record any stats.

Huff Had a Season to Forget in Philly

Huff had a forgettable stint for the Eagles in 2024, registering 13 tackles and only 2.5 sacks in 12 games. He missed five games with a torn ligament in his wrist. The $51 million free-agent bust played only 13 defensive snaps in the postseason and was inactive for Super Bowl LIX, in which the Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22.

Huff spoke the New York Post in February about wanting to “get more playing time one way or another next year,” but after losing his job to Nolan Smith, that clearly wasn’t going to happen in Philadelphia.

Months later, the Eagles shipped Huff out of town, giving him a new beginning on the West Coast.

Following the trade, Huff told “TheSFNiners” podcast, “If I’m being 100% honest with you, I wanted a trade, like, fairly early on. And just ‘cause of how things went in Philly, I knew pretty early on that it wasn’t a fit.”

Trade Condition is High Bar to Clear

If Huff’s career is any indication, the Eagles shouldn’t hang their hopes on him reaching eight sacks.

Huff has 20 sacks in five NFL seasons, 10.5 of which came in 2023 with the New York Jets. Otherwise, Huff has been a fairly pedestrian pass-rusher. His next-highest total was 3.5 the year before.

The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Huff recorded one quarterback pressure in his 49ers debut. Pro Football Focus graded him 76th out of 127 eligible edge rushers.

Despite his quiet start, there’s hope a fresh start will do Huff well. Leading up to the season, The Athletic’s Vic Tafur and Matt Barrows suggested Huff could be the “most under-hyped addition” to San Francisco’s roster.

“He’s quick off the snap, can lower his shoulder to get around the edge and — this can’t be stressed enough — was one of the few 49ers defensive linemen who was healthy throughout the spring and summer. That is, he’s gotten a lot of practice snaps and ought to hit the ground running. Look for first-round rookie Mykel Williams to line up opposite (Nick) Bosa on early downs and Huff to be in that spot on passing downs. Williams is also a strong option to rush from the inside on passing downs.”

The 49ers visit the Saints in Week 2, seeking a 2-0 start.
