NFL hands down discipline to Eagles’ Jalen Carter over spitting incident

The NFL has fined Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter $57,222 — one week’s pay — after he was ejected from the Sept. 4 season-opener vs. Dallas after spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

Carter’s ejection occurred shortly after the opening kickoff, which the league considers the equivalent of a one-game suspension. Thus, he will not have to sit out any additional games and will be eligible to play this Sunday vs. Kansas City.

“Because Carter was disqualified before participating in a single play, the suspension is considered to have been served in Week 1 and he will forfeit his game check,” the league office said in a statement on Tuesday. “The NFL Players Association has informed the NFL that Carter will not contest the discipline and has waived his right to appeal.”

The 24-year-old Carter is considered one of the best defensive players in the league, an All-Rookie selection in 2023 and a second-team All-Pro last season. The former first-round pick out of Georgia helped the Eagles to the Super Bowl championship last season, his second in the league.

Without Carter’s presence in the middle of its defense, Philadelphia fell behind early before rallying to beat the Cowboys 24-20. He expressed remorse in a post-game interview with reporters.

“You know it was a mistake that happened on my side, and it just won’t happen again,” Carter said. “I feel bad for just my teammates and the fans out there. You know, I’m doing it for them. I’m doing it for my family also but the fans, they show the most love. You heard them out there and not being able to start the game to finish the game just f---- me up, but it won’t happen again.”
