£69m star expected to be available for transfer in 2026; Manchester United keen

Manchester United could make a move for Morten Hjulmand in 2026

Manchester United had been looking to bring in a new field in the recently concluded summer transfer window, but while the Premier League heavyweight were linked with multiple players, none of the moves materialised. One of the players that was linked with a move to Old Trafford was Morten Hjulmand, but the Denmark international ended up staying put at Sporting CP.

Ruben Amorim recognises that there is a need to reinforce in the second phase, where most of the opponents in the English top tier have been gaining a lot of advantage over the past few months. And that is where the need to bring someone like the Dane comes into the picture.

He had been linked with a move to multiple clubs along the summer window, but the Portuguese giants managed to convince him to give them one more season, according to the latest by A Bola.

Manchester United are admirers of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand

United were said to be pushing for a possible reunion between Hjulmand and former Sporting CP coach Ruben Amorim. But along the summer window, Sporting were demanding that his £69m release clause be fully paid.

And while that release clause in his contract has now expired,Hjulmand is still not expected to come cheap. His contract with his current employers is still running until 2028, and Sporting Lisbon doesn’t have any intention of letting their captain walk unless it’s for a marquee fee.

That fee would still be cheaper than what Brighton are demanding for Carlos Baleba, who is also on United’s target list.

Is a January move possible for Morten Hjulmand?

Manchester United have reportedly identified Sporting Lisbon defensive midfielder Morten Hjulmand as a possible cheap alternative to Carlos Baleba.

United were reportedly ready to test the waters earlier this summer, but Sporting Lisbon’s stance was quite clear. Juventus also tried to sign him, as they were looking to replace Douglas Luiz in the middle of the park, but they couldn’t secure his signature as well.

We know how United were desperate to bring a new midfielder in the summer, which makes it highly likely that the chiefs at M16 will revisit this situation in January. But it is also to be seen if Sporting Lisbon would be open to losing their skipper in the middle of the season.
