Illan Meslier exit path blocked by Man United as Leeds United face £40m transfer reality

The first international break of the season is almost over and Premier League football is again on the horizon.

Leeds United return to action when they take on Fulham at Craven Cottage in Saturday’s 3pm kick-off. The most recent outing for the Whites saw them pick up a point against Newcastle United before the international break.

While it was a busy summer window for Daniel Farke and his staff with ten new arrivals at the club, there was the slight disappointment of being unable to bring in any more reinforcements in the final days of the window.

With the summer window now over, attentions are starting to turn toward possible movement in January. Plans will already be starting to be made in anticipation of it opening.

With that in mind, here is a look at a couple of the latest Leeds transfer rumours...

Illan Meslier blow

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier has been dealt a further blow after falling down the pecking order at Elland Road.

The Frenchman has not been involved in any matchday squad this season after losing his starting place at the end of last season. A late summer move didn’t materialise.

It has now been claimed that another possible exit route has been blocked off. According to LeedsUnited.News, Trabzonspor was an option for Meslier with the Turkish window open until September 12.

However, the Turkish side are now closing in on a loan move for Manchester United’s Andre Onana. That move is likely to put an end to any potential transfer for Meslier.

LeedsLive says: Meslier looks to have no future at Leeds, meaning that a move away from the club for the goalkeeper would be best for all parties. Even if it’s a loan deal, it will get his wages off the books.

While a move to Trabzonspor may now not be an option. Leeds will hope that other avenues in Saudi Arabia or Greece, whose transfer windows are still open, will open up.

Transfer reality

Leeds have been handed a blow to their hopes of signing Jean-Philippe Mateta this summer, with the forward reportedly having ‘no interest’ of moving to Elland Road.

Leeds, along with Aston Villa and Newcastle United, have been linked with an interest in the Crystal Palace man.

According to TEAMtalk, the striker’s ‘ambitions stretch far beyond’ Leeds with Mateta instead looking to move to a club that can offer European football.

LeedsLive says : A £40 million move for Mateta in the January window would be an ambitious one for Leeds and they would have a big fight on their hands if they are to go up against either Aston Villa or Newcastle in a transfer race with both teams able to offer European football.

It’s a problem that Leeds could find if they wish to sign an established Premier League striker. Most in that position could have their eyes on higher up the table, meaning the Whites may have to shop in different markets.
