Illan Meslier set for Leeds United lifeline as huge new injury claims emerge

Illan Meslier may return to the Leeds United matchday squad this weekend as Lucas Perri is said to have sustained an injury in training.

The club's former number one has not featured in over a month since playing the second half of a pre-season friendly against Villarreal at Elland Road in early August.

Meslier dropping out of the squad coincided with the Whites signing Perri during the summer transfer window.

He was not even involved in the League Cup first round tie, in which Karl Darlow started against Sheffield Wednesday. Perri dropped down to the substitute's bench in South Yorkshire.

FourFourTwo now reports that the Brazilian has an injury of unknown severity after training before the visit to Fulham on Saturday afternoon. Leeds head coach Daniel Farke will presumably address the situation during a pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon.

Darlow would almost certainly deputise for Perri if any injury were to force a change of goalkeeper, despite his involvement in the League Cup exit at Hillsborough. The veteran has notably played more than Meslier, featuring for Wales and keeping a clean sheet in their 1-0 win over Kazakhstan in World Cup qualifying on Thursday.

In comparison, the former France under-21 international has spent all summer being the subject of links with a move away after being displaced by Darlow late last season. Lorient, the club from whom Leeds signed Meslier five years ago and Como were clubs credited with an interest in the goalkeeper, but no move to either materialised.

The transfer window in Greece and Turkey, among other countries, remains open, but no exit appears imminent for Meslier despite a lack of involvement across the last month.

His contract notably expires at the end of this season, when the goalkeeper will almost assuredly depart if no move happens before then.
