The international break is over until next month and between now and then, Newcastle United face a very busy period.
Wolverhampton Wanderers visit St James’ Park in the Premier League on Saturday, and it feels somewhat like the beginning of a new chapter for Newcastle.
An intense summer took its toll on the Magpies, with Alexander Isak’s refusal to play leaving the side without an experienced striker for the opening three matches of the campaign. Eddie Howe’s side have played out goalless draws away to Aston Villa and Leeds United, and lost 3-2 defeat to Liverpool, despite fighting back from two goals down with 10 men.
Now that the summer transfer window is closed, Howe’s side can look forward. Isak is gone and Howe has a new-look strike force, with £69million club-record signing Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa chomping at the bit to make their debuts.
United also hope to be boosted by a full complement of midfielders, with there being a chance Joelinton and Jacob Ramsey are available following their recent injury scares.
NewcastleWorld takes a look at Newcastle’s current absentee list and when each player is expected to return:
Anthony Gordon
Gordon was handed a three-match ban for a red card challenge on Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk. He missed the goalless draw at Leeds United and will miss the next two Premier League matches against Wolves and Bournemouth, though will be available for the Champions League clash against Barcelona in between that.

On the red card, Howe said: “I've seen it once and very rushed. It was as the game had restarted, so naturally I wanted to see it and wanted to move on very quickly. I think there's no intent he's gone in.
“Of course, probably too quickly. I think he's tried to pull out, not commit any damage to Virgil as he's gone in to slide. It's an unfortunate one, I think he's slightly unlucky with it.
“Everyone's told me it's a clear red. My first opinion was slightly different, but maybe I've got the wrong angle. So I've got sympathy for him.”
Estimated return date
Barcelona (H), 18/09.
Joelinton
Joelinton left the pitch against Liverpool visibly upset after picking up a muscle injury inside the remaining quarter of an hour, but scan results revealed the Brazilian had avoided a serious injury.
The 29-year-old missed the draw at Leeds but there is hope he will be available against Wolves after the international break.
What’s been said?
Howe said: “Joelinton's scan was relatively good. He will miss this weekend, but there's a chance he could be available the other side of the international break.”
Estimated return date
Wolverhampton Wanderers (H), 13/09.
Jacob Ramsey
Ramsey, a £39million summer signing from Aston Villa, saw his full debut cut short against Leeds last weekend due to a swollen ankle.
However, the suggestion is Ramsey will be fine to feature when Wolves visit St James’ Park on September 13. Earlier this week, the midfielder shared photos to his Instagram story of himself in action at Elland Road with the caption “see you all after the break”.
What’s been said?
Howe said after Leeds: “Yeah, his ankle swelled up at half-time, so he decided not to take any risks.”
