“Problem between clubs” – Sunderland player swerving controversy over failed summer exit

On deadline day, Sunderland let Jenson Seelt complete a season-long loan move to VfL Wolfsburg. NEC Nijmegen had also shown interest in the centre-back and were confident of acquiring his signature.

Earlier in the summer window, the Dutch club sold goalkeeper Robin Roefs to Sunderland for €10.5m, and as part of the agreement, they had agreed a deal with the Black Cats to sign Seelt on loan.

Last week, NEC Nijmegen general manager Wilco van Schaik slammed Régis Le Bris’ side and accused them of breaking the verbal agreement for Seelt’s temporary transfer. Van Schaik said the club’s technical director, Carlos Aalbers, regretted selling the stopper to Sunderland.

Prior to leaving the Stadium of Light on a temporary move, he played three games for the Premier League newcomers. The 22-year-old has presented his views on the Eredivisie side’s failure to acquire his signature and WAZ have relayed his comments.

“To be honest, I was very busy with Sunderland. We had an important Premier League game. [I] heard a bit from my agents. It was just a problem between the clubs,” he said.

The former PSV Eindhoven man says the negotiations for his transfer to the Bundesliga club took place in a short period of time.

“Sunderland told me I had to stay, so I stayed and played my games. At the end of the month, my agent told me Wolfsburg had contacted me. I knew I was going to Germany,” Seelt explained.

The Sunderland owned player said he’s “very happy” to have joined a “huge club” like Wolfsburg.

“When I was growing up, they had a very good team with players like Kevin De Bruyne and Edin Džeko. They played in the Champions League or the Europa League. I think I have good opportunities to grow here,” he added.
