“Serious muscle injury” – West Ham player setback, recovery period yet to be determined

Graham Potter didn’t include Edson Álvarez in his core plans this season and West Ham United let the midfielder join Fenerbahçe on a loan deal in the summer window.

The Mexico international played the full 90 minutes in the Turkish club’s 3-1 league win over Genclerbirligi on August 31st and then joined the national team for this international break.

He started in El Tri’s friendly draw against Japan but was forced off the pitch in the 32nd minute due to an injury. The West Ham man was replaced by Cruz Azul’s Érik Lira and the setback forced him to miss the 2-2 friendly draw against South Korea.

Prior to this tie, the Mexican football association confirmed that the 27-year-old suffered a hamstring injury and Record have relayed the statement. They aren’t aware of the extent of the damage, and it will be found out upon his return to Fenerbahçe.

“A serious muscle injury in his right hamstring. The rehabilitation time and return to competition will be determined by his club based on his progress,” a statement read.

The former Ajax man had a difficult start to the season as he had to leave West Ham for the Istanbul club, who sacked José Mourinho and appointed Domenico Tedesco as his successor.

Álvarez’s setback will be a blow for both him and Fenerbahçe, and the Hammers would be keeping a close watch on his recovery.
