Why Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi’s live TV interview after first England goal was abruptly…

The reason why Marc Guehi’s live TV interview was abruptly cut short after scoring his first England goal has now emerged. The Crystal Palace defender has been in fine form of late and, after curling a superb finish into the top-right corner in a recent 3-0 Premier League win over Aston Villa, he has once again found the back of the net.

In Belgrade on Tuesday night, Guehi’s first international goal came in far more typical fashion for a defender. Outmuscling Strahinja Pavlovic from a set piece, he poked home England’s fourth of the night before Marcus Rashford converted a 90th-minute penalty to seal a convincing 5-0 victory over Serbia. Watch Guehi’s goal below:

Guehi’s recent scoring touch is simply a bonus on top of years of consistent performances. His form even attracted strong interest from champions Liverpool over the summer. A deal and medical had been completed, only for the Palace hierarchy to pull the plug at the eleventh hour. So, while the 25-year-old has looked imperious on the pitch of late, luck has not always been on his side.

Why Guehi's Interview Was Cut Short Following First England Goal

After the match, Noni Madueke - who had also found the net alongside Harry Kane and Ezri Konsa - joined Guehi for a post-match interview with ITV’s Gabriel Clarke. Both players were thrilled to have helped England secure a huge win in their push for World Cup qualification, extending the Three Lions’ run to 10-and-a-half hours without conceding a goal.

But just as Guehi was mid-sentence, the broadcast abruptly cut back to the ITV studio. The reason was that the interview had run over time, and the channel was forced to switch to the ITV News at Ten. The result was an awkward moment, with host Mark Pougatch hurriedly wrapping up the coverage while pundits Roy Keane and Ian Wright managed strained smiles. See their reaction below:

Still, before being cut off, the Crystal Palace captain had plenty to say about a hugely successful night in Serbia's capital, which was considered England's toughest test under Thomas Tuchel to date. Watch the uncut interview below:

"(Action-packed last eight days?) It’s been great! It’s always easy coming here, we’ve got such a good group of players and staff. We’re all working towards a goal, so it’s always good and enjoyable to be here.

“I’m over the moon (to score my first England goal). It’s a fantastic feeling, you work really hard, to score a goal for your country is the best feeling.”

Guehi will be hoping for another successful outing when he returns to action for Crystal Palace next weekend, as the Eagles face newly promoted Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.

Oliver Glasner’s side remain unbeaten this season and, having already lifted both the FA Cup and Community Shield in back-to-back Wembley finals, they look set for another campaign full of big ambitions.
