'Setting the pace': Bruno Guimaraes gets high praise but a low score as Brazilian media react…

· 10 September 2025, 10:00

**The mystery of whatever happened to the Brazil national football team remains an open case, as the Selecao fell to another unexpected defeat last night.**

Newcastle United's Bruno Guimares kept his place in Carlo Ancelotti's lineup and was one of Brazil's better players overall, but was also the villain of the piece.

Playing in the uncomfortable altitudes of Bolivia, which Neymar had previously spoken about as being inhumane, the Brazilians struggled to adapt, and the hosts were able to pick up a 1-0 win.

In the grand scheme of things, the result is meaningless for Brazil, which booked its place in next year's World Cup months ago.

Bruno Guimaraes in action for Brazil

Bruno Guimaraes conceded the penalty that led to Brazil's defeat against Bolivia

A penalty, conceded by Wor Bruno and scored by Miguel Terceros for Bolivia, was all it took to keep the points in the Bolivian mountains. > “His performance was compromised by the penalty, but he was still one of the national team’s best players, setting the pace and appearing to have more energy than the rest.

Globo are notoriously harsh with their ratings for the National team, but 5.5 for their best player? Come on, lads.

Newcastle United appear to be fighting fit ahead of Saturday's Premier League return

Bruno will return to Newcastle now to get ready for Saturday's visit of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It looks like all of our internationals will return fully fit despite the scare that Yoane Wissa, who scored twice for his country this week, had hobbled off the field last night. There seems to be nothing this morning to suggest he's carrying a knock, so he should be ready to make his debut on Saturday.

Nick Woltemade may have a confidence issue after receiving some harsh criticism this week, but that's something Eddie Howe can fix.
