Real Madrid identify £70m Premier League defender as alternative to Konate

Real Madrid are set to look for a new central defender in the next summer transfer window, with a new target reportedly emerging.

For several weeks, Real Madrid have been interested in Ibrahima Konate to strengthen their central defence. The Merengues are keen to recruit the Frenchman, who has just entered the final year of his contract. Konate's career plan has been revealed, and he is reportedly considering leaving Liverpool on a free transfer to join Madrid.

This would represent another major free transfer coup for the Spanish giants, who have previously signed players such as Kylian Mbappe and Trent Alexander-Arnold under similar terms in recent transfer windows. The 26-year-old would be expected to replace David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger, both of whom are out of contract and unlikely to be extended.

While the Konate deal would be ideal for Real Madrid, the club are reportedly exploring other options at central defence, possibly as plan B. According to Fichajes, La Liga side Real Madrid are also interested in Tottenham’s young central defender, Micky van de Ven. The 24-year-old Dutch international has a profile suited to strengthen Madrid’s backline.

Standing at 1.93m, van de Ven is known for his pace and is also capable of playing at left-back. He forms a strong and complementary partnership with Argentinian Cristian Romero at Spurs. It is worth noting that van de Ven is under contract until June 2029 and is considered an important player by Tottenham.

The London club are reportedly demanding €80m (£70m) for their central defender, who arrived from Wolfsburg in August 2023 for €40m (£34,5m).
