One West Ham player dropped a disappointing performance during a win for his national side.
One of West Ham’s players disappointed despite playing a part in a historic win for his nation on Tuesday night. Senegal had to come from two goals behind to been the Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday, and remarkably, it is the first time they have ever come back from two goals behind to win.
Pape Gueye, Nicolas Jackson and Tottenham star Pape Matar Sarr got the goals to complete the comeback, and that was a big win indeed.
It puts Senegal at the top of their qualifying group with two games remaining, and six points ahead of third placed Sudan, they are pretty much qualified for the 2026 World Cup. Congo are actually second, and Senegal have now leapfrogged them to move two points ahead at the top.
WIW Sport rated the players after the historic win, and West Ham’s £19million summer signing El Hadj Malick Diouf - who played the whole game - got slaughtered in the report.
It read: “EL HADJI MALICK DIOUF (2/10) : Senegal's biggest hole this Tuesday afternoon. A real nightmare for the West Ham left-back. El Hadji Malick Diouf was completely dominated by Meschack Elia and was far too lax and tender in this duel. On several occasions, the former Slavia Prague player was far too late, particularly in his coverage, and slow in his run at the time of the Congolese's second goal. Offensively, with the exception of a cross that ended up on Dimitry Bertraud's crossbar (29th), he didn't contribute much, missing almost everything he attempted. A match to forget.”
West Ham will want to see Diouf pick his form back up on the other side of the international break when they face London rivals Tottenham on Saturday. When Diouf signed in the summer, Graham Potter said: “He is young, hungry and ambitious, and I think he will be a very positive addition to the group,"
He added after one game in the summer: “Malik was positive in terms of his deliveries, and his crosses were really good.” Diouf has done well in the Premier League so far despite a patchy Hammers stars, providing two assists in three games.
