Italian midfielder ‘not convinced’ by Newcastle United move as talks break down

Newcastle United maintained an arm’s length interest in Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi over the summer.

Newcastle United reportedly failed to make Davide Frattesi “feel important” during discussions about a possible loan deal.

Toon chiefs were understood to have maintained an arm’s length interest in the midfielder over the summer. Fans got noticeably excited about the prospect of two Italian internationals in the engine room, with Sandro Tonali the current cult hero at St James’ Park.

Ultimately, Newcastle’s priorities lay elsewhere during the latter stages of the window. Jacob Ramsey had already arrived to bolster the engine room, with all of the focus on signing two strikers to replace Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak.

How Davide Frattesi viewed Newcastle United talks

Italian outlet Calciomercato claim Frattesi was not convinced by Newcastle’s interest. Interestingly, the report suggests the Magpies could have landed the 25-year-old had they been more aggressive with their approach.

The suggestion was that Newcastle would sign Fratessi on loan, with a potential permanent deal at the end of the season. His future remains in limbo as he is now competing for a starting role with new signing Andy Diouf.

Fratessi has been recovering from a hernia operation in the summer and played just 23 minutes during the recent international break. With two years left to run on his deal next summer, the Inter Milan star could be one to watch in future.

Davide Frattesi and Sandro Tonali agent

Frattesi and Tonali share the same agent - Beppe Riso - to further thicken the plot. Speaking in February, Riso revealed he was the one “pushing” for a possible move due to a lack of game time.

“It was my idea,” he said. “Or, if you prefer, my push. I saw Davide feeling down because he expected to play more, and I felt bad about it. So, I started working to find alternatives for him, not just in Italy.”
