Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are hoping to leave their mark at Tottenham and win more silverware in the coming years
As far as centre-back pairings go in the Premier League this season, Tottenham duo Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are right up there among the best. The pair has shown time and again that they are crucial for the Lilywhites to gain any type of success. And that was proved when they were two standout players in the North London club’s historic win over Manchester United in the Europa League final.
However, last season was quite unfortunate for both defenders as they missed out on several important games due to injury. Romero and Van de Ven were side-lined for the same amount of time, and that was one of the major factors for Spurs enduring a disastrous domestic campaign.

Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are looking to make more history at Tottenham under Thomas Frank.
But they recovered well in time for the latter stages of the Europa League, ensuring that the Lilywhites kept three clean sheets in seven games. One of those clean sheets came in the final, where Cristian Romero was voted as the ‘Man of the Match’ and Van de Ven managed to clear the ball off the goal-line. Their performance on that day will live long in the memories of the Spurs faithful.
Micky van de Ven likes to play alongside Cristian Romero at Tottenham
Not many fans will deny that extending Cristian Romero’s contract was one of the best bits of business that Tottenham did in the summer. The Argentinian’s contract extension also meant that the Spurs faithful would get to see both Romero and Van de Ven play alongside each other for a long time to come, taking their partnership to new heights.
Now, Van de Ven has shared how it feels playing alongside Romero at N17. Speaking to Tottenham’s media team, the Spurs No.37 said,
“That’s what I hope. Of course, last season we both had long-term injuries, and we both were also out for the same amount of time. But I know also when I play with Cuti, and hopefully the other way around, there’s just a feeling that we can trust each other blindly. From the beginning he was there.”
The Dutchman added,
“He helped me with everything. On and off the pitch, he spoke with me all the time. Then of course, the more games you play together, the more trust you’re going to build. And there’s more confidence in each other. I hope I can play as many games with him as he signed a big deal.”
Micky van de Ven hopes to play alongside Cristian Romero for a long time after both defenders endured a ‘stop-start’ campaign last season. The Dutchman adds that Romero has been there for him from the start and helped him settle at the club. Van de Ven also believes that the confidence in each other will only build once they start playing regularly week in week out.
Thomas Frank is hoping to build on the Europa League success this season. And it is fair to say that he is going to rely on both Romero and Van de Ven for crucial games. So, both players will have to be at their ‘A-game’ if they want to etch their names in the history books for years to come.
