(Opinion) Thomas Tuchel delivers two words that show exactly why Oliver Glasner was so…

Marc Guehi delivered a phenomenal display for England against Serbia on Tuesday night.

The Crystal Palace No.6 scored his first goal for the Three Lions with an instinctive finish, before also assisting his defensive partner Ezri Konsa as England recorded a thumping 5-0 win.

Thomas Tuchel unsurprisingly heaped praise on Marc Guehi – and his comments shed light on a specific detail which shows exactly why Oliver Glasner wanted to keep the man born in Abidjan at Selhurst Park.

“Best teammate” comment says it all about Marc Guehi

In a summer transfer window where the likes of Alexander Isak and Yoane Wissa acted childishly at Newcastle and Brentford respectively – going on strike to force moves to Liverpool and Newcastle – Guehi was the epitome of maturity.

The Crystal Palace captain never said a word out of line in the media, and continued to deliver immense performances for Glasner – his efforts have helped the Eagles remain unbeaten across six games in all competitions this season.

After Guehi – who likes to pray with his Crystal Palace teammates – shone against Serbia, Tuchel told ITV: “It’s the example of how the boys were in this camp, exactly like this. They put their personal interests aside. He was the best teammate possible and had a fantastic performance. Very strong for Crystal Palace and showed it today on the pitch.”

The “best teammate” comments says it all.

Not only did Glasner want to keep Guehi because he’s a terrific footballer, but the Austrian also knew the 25-year-old would never kick up a fuss around Copers Cope or become a nuisance to his teammates.

If the £18m man keeps performing to this standard, Liverpool should expect fierce competition for his signature in 2026.

Even Real Madrid want to sign the Crystal Palace No.6

Liverpool might actually now struggle to land Guehi – who was once a target for Newcastle too.

Spanish news outlet Sport believe Barcelona and Real Madrid are showing an interest, and crucially, foreign clubs are able to strike pre-contract agreements in January, which English sides cannot do.

It means one of the Spanish giants – or even Bayern Munich, who are keen too – could wrap up the signing of Guehi on a free transfer as early as January, ahead of him actually making the move in the summer.
