Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana is reportedly set to travel to Turkey on Thursday for a medical, a final step before his proposed loan move to Trabzonspor is made official according to Fabrizio Romano.
The transfer follows a challenging period for the 29-year-old, who has faced criticism since his 2023 arrival from Inter Milan.
Despite being a regular starter for his first two seasons, Onana has fallen out of favor under manager Ruben Amorim and is now considered the club’s third-choice goalkeeper.
Altay Bayındır has started all three of Manchester United’s opening Premier League matches, while Onana’s only appearance came in a Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town.
The situation was further compounded by the recent acquisition of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day.
The two clubs have agreed to a loan deal that does not include a permanent buy option. The Turkish transfer window remains open until September 12, allowing the transfer to proceed.
Onana will join a Trabzonspor squad currently sitting in second place in the Turkish Süper Lig. The team features a number of other notable international players, including former Manchester City defender Stefan Savić and ex-Southampton forward Paul Onuachu.
While the Cameroonian international has three years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, his long-term future with the club is uncertain. His lack of consistency has been a major issue, and if Lammens establishes himself as the team’s long-term number one, Onana’s path back into the starting lineup will be difficult.
